Published Sept. 29, 2022. A new campaign is aiming to finally clear away a financial barrier to therapy — a tax on counselling therapists and psychotherapists’ services, which experts say is unfair.

OTTAWA, September 20, 2022—Today, a national coalition of mental health and counselling/psychotherapy organizations are calling on the federal government to remove the inequitable GST/HST requirement for counselling therapists and psychotherapists by immediately passing legislation to make therapy services tax-free in Canada.

Groups have lobbied government in vain for years to get rid of HST on counselling. If governments want to improve access to qualified mental health counselling, they should stop taxing the services, say licensed counselling therapists in the province.
